Seen from a high angle to the right of the painting, this object turns out to be a skull. This stretched illusionistic device is called anamorphosis.

When the illusion of the skull is perceived from the right of the painting, the image of the ambassadors and their possessions, in turn, becomes distorted and ungraspable. Through the anamorphic device of distortion, the subject – that is, the viewer – sees that the apparently whole, seamless world of the ambassadors is in fact an elaborate fiction. Seeing the skull three-dimensionally is also to realize that one’s belief in the living (ambassadors’) world is actually implicated in a skilfully constructed fiction.

Originally, “The Ambassadors” may have been intended to teach a Christian lesson about the vanity of material possessions.
